Hello, my wellness warriors!

Did you know that I took 8,000 strides of glory today? Yep, that’s right! I have been a pedestrian powerhouse, and boy, do I feel fantastic! This isn’t a humble brag, it’s a whole-brag. But, my dear friends, there’s way more to this number than you might think.

Now, before you ask, no, I wasn’t trying to hatch a Pokemon Go egg (are people still playing that?). And no, I wasn’t aimlessly wandering the neighborhood in search of misplaced keys (I found them in the fridge, though… don’t ask). I was actually fulfilling my daily step goal, which makes me feel better than finding a forgotten $20 in the pocket of my winter coat.

This 8,000-steps-a-day journey began when I read about the New Mexico Governor’s plan to provide universal access to childcare. I thought, “Imagine the energy of those kids! They must be taking like a million steps a day!” So, I decided to try adding a few more steps to my daily routine.

Now, before you start to panic and declare, “8,000 steps? I’m not a marathon runner!” let me put things into perspective. The 8,000 steps don’t have to be one continuous, Forrest Gump-style cross-country run. You can break it up throughout the day. Skip the elevator and take the stairs, walk to the store instead of driving, or simply take Spot on an extra walk around the block—it all adds up.

So why 8,000? Well, it’s not just because it’s a fancy, round number that could easily be a contestant on “The Price is Right.”

A 2020 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that individuals taking 8,000 steps per day had a 51% lower risk for all-cause mortality, compared with those taking 4,000 steps. That’s about the same reduction in risk as a smoker quitting cigarettes. Shocked emojis, anyone?

Walking also helps with weight management, heart health, and stress reduction. It can improve sleep and mood, and boost creativity and memory. Think about it. What’s the one thing you do when you want to clear your mind? You walk it off. The benefits are numerous, and the cost? Free!

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “8,000 steps? I ain’t got time for that!” But guess what? You do! And I’ve got a secret weapon that can help you track those steps and manage various other aspects of your health journey: SimpleFitness.ai.
